Geothermal Heating and Cooling

For more information contact Allen now!

What is a geothermal?

Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) – or geothermal - are electrically powered systems that tap the stored energy of the greatest solar collector in existence: the earth. These systems can use the earth’s relatively constant temperature to provide heating, cooling, and hot water for your home.

How does geothermal work?

Closed loop ground source heat pumps – or geothermal - circulate antifreeze solutions through plastic pipes buried beneath the earths surface. During the winter, the fluid collects heat from the earth and carries it through the system and into the home. During the summer, the system reverses itself to cool the home by pulling heat from the home, carrying it through the system and placing it in the ground. This process creates free hot water in the summer and delivers substantial hot water savings in the winter.

What's it take to install one in my home?

The most difficult part is installing the tubing in the earth. For a typical Cincinnati home 3 to 8 vertical wells – 6 inches wide and between 150 and 300 feet deep – must be drilled in your yard. Tubing is then run down the shaft and back to the surface. A grout is installed in the hole to encase the tubing and enhance heat transfer. The tubes are welded together and run underground to your basement foundation near your existing central air conditioner. Once this is accomplished the installation is simple. We replace your central air conditioner with a ground source heat pump. Install a new coil in your furnace plenum, replace the tubing set that connects the coil to the pump, add a few controls and antifreeze and you are up and running. If you have a heat pump or oil furnace the process works much the same way with different equipment and some variation on the installation process.

What's it going to cost?

Let's get right to it: A typical geothermal system will be somewhere between $18,000.00 and $25,000.00. It sound expensive – and it is – but remember if you were considering replacing your existing furnace and air anyway you could have half that much in a fossil fuel system.

Why would I want geothermal?

  • Geothermal is one of the most efficient residential heating and cooling systems available today.
  • Geothermal heating efficiencies are 50 to 70% higher than other heating systems and cooling efficiencies 20 to 40% higher than available air conditioners. With energy rates escalating the savings can be huge.
  • Conserve natural resources by providing climate control efficiently and thus lowering emissions.
  • Uses underground loops to transfer heat, with no external venting and not air pollution.
  • Burn less fossil fuel, which in turn lowers your carbon foot print and dependence on natural resources.

How do I get more information?

We don't want to waste your time or ours. Call Allen at 942 9663 ext 6100, or by email at allenb@gorb.net. He will ask you a few questions, locate your home on Google earth, and determine if geothermal is an option for you. If it looks as though we can install a system in your home we can move forward with an in home estimate.
